High Desert Memories - A Hometown Journal Commemorating Ridgecrest California
Manzanar
When I arrived in the desert in 1943 Manzanar was still an active internment camp.  My family took me to the front gate to show me what it was all about.  I thought naively at the time that it was probably a pretty good idea.   Today I think it was a needless tragedy which we perpetrated on the Japanese people here in the USA out of fear.  The pictures you see here are from a website that is filled with pictures about this camp.  They very accurately illustrate the conditions and the life of the camp.  There are many sites on the internet which record pictorially what life was like in the multiple interment camps.
